The American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter is seeking 2500 Square Feet for new Health Care Training Class Room Site in Northern Macomb County

The American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter is seeking 2500 Square Feet for new Health Care Training Class Room Site in Northern Macomb County

(Detroit, Mich, May 11, 1009)-Due to expanding need for health care training programs, the American Red Cross is looking to add classes in Nurse Assistant Training (NAT) as well as other health care training courses in Northern Macomb County.

The Southeastern Michigan Chapter's NAT program offers one of the most comprehensive training programs in the state because of its superior training, low tuition cost and job placement ratio.

"As jobs fall in Michigan, the need for education and training is increasing and we need to add these courses now,” said Tequilla Smith, Health and Safety Director for the Southeastern Michigan Chapter. "However, due to funding and lack of resources, the Red Cross doesn't have the building space to accommodate the new classroom sites."

The Red Cross needs 2500 square feet of building space to accommodate the new classroom sites and is looking for a three-year commitment. If you have space available in your building or know of space available in Northern Macomb County, please contact the American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter at (313) 833-2649.

$100,000 Grant to Help Red Cross Provide Emergency Aid to Michigan Military Personnel

$100,000 Grant to Help Red Cross Provide Emergency Aid to Michigan Military Personnel

April 15, 2009) - In response to the increasing need of programs to support our local U.S. military personnel and their families, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan recently awarded $100,000 to the American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter to assist in efforts to expand its Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) program, which provides emergency aid and assistance to U.S. military personnel, their families and veterans statewide.

The Red Cross is the area’s leading agency in providing emergency aid and assistance to military service members and their families through several programs and services, and the Southeastern Michigan Chapter has seen a 150 percent increase in their military services since 2002.

“This grant will go a long way in helping implement new SAF services focused on helping our local service members and their families in coping with the stresses of military duty,” said James Laverty, CEO of the Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the Red Cross. “We are extremely grateful to the Foundation for their generosity and continued commitment to addressing the needs of Southeast Michigan.”

In addition to its mainstay programs of emergency communication, financial assistance and counseling referral services, the American Red Cross will now offer new courses designed to provide critical psychological and post-service support to service members and their families.

Besides providing these services to those service members from southeast Michigan, the local Red Cross chapter recently became the lead chapter for the entire SAF program in coordinating the military services statewide for other Red Cross chapters.

“The need for our SAF program has dramatically increased,” said Eleanor Ivey, ARC-SEM SAF manager. “Support like that from the Foundation is necessary to address this increased demand, while helping us to fulfill our commitment to supporting our troops and their families.”

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is a permanent community endowment built by gifts from thousands of individuals and organizations committed to the future of southeast Michigan. The Foundation works to improve the region’s quality of life by connecting those who care with causes that matter. The Foundation supports a wide variety of activities benefiting education, arts and culture, health, human services, community development and civic affairs. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed more than $333 million through more than 32,000 grants to nonprofit organizations throughout Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Washtenaw, St. Clair and Livingston counties. Red Cross CPR/First Aid Classes Offered at New Location in Livonia

April 9

Red Cross CPR/First Aid Classes Offered at New Location in Livonia
(Livonia, Mich., April 9, 2009) - The American Red Cross is teaching CPR/First Aid/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) classes at their new location in Livonia, which is located at 20319 Middlebelt Rd., just south of Eight Mile.

Besides training citizens to save the life of a family member or co-worker, the Red Cross courses also meet requirements for professional certifications, such as for teachers, OSHA, licensed day care providers, dental professionals and others.

The classes are offered during the day, evening and weekends for students’ convenience, and are available on an ongoing basis. The classes last from one to three sessions and cost between $50 and $225. Other Red Cross courses such as babysitter training are also available.

With its recent relocation to Livonia, the Red Cross is looking to serve residents in surrounding communities as well, including Farmington, Farmington Hills, Garden City, Novi, Northville, Dearborn, Westland, Canton and Plymouth.

“We believe that someone from every household and workplace should be certified in CPR, First Aid and AED,” said Julie Sommers, Community Safety and Aquatics Manager. “The reason is it takes emergency personnel an average of 10 minutes to arrive and administer care. That can be too long for someone who is choking or has stopped breathing.”

“By learning these skills, you can become a person who can take charge and save someone’s life in an emergency,” she said.

Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross Receives $50,000 Grant for its Service to Armed Forces Program

February 24

The American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter announced it received a $50,000 grant for its Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) program from Target. The SAF program provides emergency aid to US military personnel, their families and veterans in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

“This grant from Target is making a big difference to the military services program,” said James Laverty, CEO of the American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter. “Since 2002, there has been a 200% increase in activity related to the Service to the Armed Forces program. This reflects the increased number of military personnel deployed overseas and the number of service members returning home, some of whom have had extended tours, and/or multiple deployments.”

“This grant came at a time when we need it most,” Laverty said.

“Military-related services offered by the American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter that the Target grant will support include worldwide emergency communications between deployed service members and their families, access to monetary assistance during financial crises and veteran assistance,” said Andrea Tomaszewski, public affairs associate for the Red Cross chapter. “Other services we provide include referrals and support for community-based military families and assistance for people in locating relatives with whom they have lost contact with due to natural disaster, war or internal conflict.”

Another service offered for military personnel and their families is an initial orientation program called Get to Know Us before You Need Us. When military personnel return home, the Southeastern Michigan Chapter offers weekend workshops that focus on reintegrating them back into society and family, she said, adding that both seminars are open to the entire military family.

“As the lead chapter in Michigan for the military services program, we are coordinating the efforts of and assisting Red Cross chapters throughout the state with implementing these military services,” said Eleanor Ivey, manager of the American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter’s Service to the Armed Forces program.

“Besides being the lead chapter in the state, we are also increasing our services available to military personnel and their families, such as the newly added Weekend Reintegration Workshops,” she said. “We are really excited about this grant from Target. It will allow us to provide much-needed services to military personnel and their families.”

Laysha Ward, vice president, community relations, Target concurs, saying, “At Target, our local grants are making a difference in the communities we serve. We’re proud to partner with the American Red Cross, Southeastern Michigan Chapter as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work.”
