Committed, compassionate volunteers are the heart and soul of the Red Cross. Volunteers support every Red Cross program and service. You can offer aid and comfort to those affected by disaster. You can help build a safer community by teaching Red Cross lifesaving courses. You can provide vital preparedness information at classes and through community outreach.

Volunteer Opportunities
The American Red Cross in southeast Michigan offers a variety of exciting opportunities for volunteers with varying experience where you can help others save lives, assist families in times of crisis and make our community safer. See the list below to find out what interests you or your group then contact us today through the online sign up form.
Emergency Services
Disaster Relief Volunteer
Provide comfort and aid to victims of home fires and other local disasters as part of a rotating on-call team of Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers. Assess needs at disaster scenes, provide comfort items such as blankets, and disburse vouchers for food, clothing and temporary shelter to help local families recover from a devastating loss. You must have a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver’s license.
Speakers Bureau Volunteer
The American Red Cross has great information to share with the community. Learn about them and become a presenter to local businesses, churches, etc. Toipics include disaster preparedness, home fires, and life-saving information.
Service to the Armed Forces
Help your local Red Cross support U.S. armed forces and their families. You can assist with emergency and support services for military members and their families, provide casework on disasters and help with international tracing and social services. Clerical skills a plus. Extensive training provided.
Community Outreach
Community Event Coordinator
Don’t want to be tied to a desk? Help us help your community by representing the Red Cross at health and community fairs and distributing information at local libraries, community centers, and neighborhood gathering places. No experience necessary. In most cases, you name your hours.
Instructor/Trainers
Red Cross Instructor
Deliver safety messages through Red Cross courses in First Aid and CPR and babysitting. No experience necessary. Complete training provided at a cost with partial reimbursement after you teach a specified number of courses.
Blood Services
Blood Collection Volunteer
Join a blood collection team that helps meet nearly 100% of the area’s need for lifesaving blood products. Assist with registration of blood donors, label blood collection containers and serve refreshments to donors. Six-hour shifts available at all six Red Cross donor centers and at mobile sites. Free training. No direct contact with blood.
Transportation Volunteers
Carry vital blood supplies to area hospitals and deliver mail between Red Cross offices. Must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license and a very good driving record..
Leadership Opportunities
Are you a leader?
If you’ve worked in the business world, effectively run a household, or been a captain or coach of a sports team, you may have leadership and management skills that can help the Red Cross. Volunteer leadership positions include planning volunteer events such as recognition programs; interviewing, orienting and training new volunteers; coordinating blood drive staffing; and record-keeping. Positions are available at the Chapter Headquarters in Detroit and at Red Cross offices near you.
Youth Opportunities
If you are 14 or older
You can volunteer for the most respected humanitarian organization in the world. To fulfill community service commitment for your school or just to help out in your community, check out the Red Cross. Training is free. Click here for School Programs
Blood Drives
Host, organize and/or volunteer at a blood drive at your church, school or workplace. Training is provided to blood collection volunteers.
Comfort Days Campaign
Collect hygiene products, including trial-size shampoo bottles, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant and soap. Donate the items to the Red Cross and we will package them and provide the Comfort Kits to victims of disasters and homeless shelters. More on this campaign to come.
Fundraisers
Your group can collect funds on behalf of the Red Cross in order for the chapter to continue providing relief to distressed families in times of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
